About the Woodworking
The Finish
Have to start with the finish. It is almost always the first thing people notice about Firedrake furniture. A true hand-rubbed oil finish is rare these days, and has to be seen (and felt) in person to be believed. The perfect satin sheen, tactile feel, warm color, durability, and ease of repair and renewal all make the linseed oil finish used on most creations far superior to other finishes. It takes more time to cure, and is labor intensive, but the results make it worthwhile. In addition, it consists of polymerized linseed oil and pine pitch, making it non-toxic, food-safe, and zero VOC.
Within the modern design aesthetic, the construction techniques used on Firedrake furniture draw on the long tradition and wisdom inherited from a craft developed and refined over centuries. Hand tools are often used, lending an organic feel and attention to detail that can’t be achieved by feeding wood through a machine. The results are not only more beautiful, but practically bullet-proof. With reasonable care Firedrake furniture will far outlive the buyer.
